SEO Best Practices for 2025: What You Need to Know

Search changed shape faster in the last two years than in the ten before them. Most of the advice written for the old shape still circulates, which is why so much SEO work now produces a graph that goes sideways.

The page is no longer ten blue links

A query that used to return a list now returns an answer, a set of related questions, a video carousel and then the list. Ranking first is worth less than it was, and being the source an answer is drawn from is worth more.

That reframes the work. The question is not "how do I outrank this page" but "what would make this the page somebody quotes", and those two lead to very different drafts.

What still moves the needle

  • Answering the question in the first paragraph. Not the fourth. A reader who has to scroll to find out whether they are in the right place usually decides they are not.
  • One page per intent. Three thin pages competing for one query is a problem you caused. Merge them and the merged page usually beats all three.
  • Speed on the device people actually use. Test on a mid-range phone on a slow connection, not on the laptop the page was built on.
  • Links from places that would link anyway. A link you had to negotiate for is usually a link that does nothing. One earned by being the best explanation of something is not.

What to stop doing

Keyword density has not mattered for a decade and writing to a target word count never did. Both survive because they are easy to measure, which is the same reason they are easy to game and therefore ignored.

Publishing on a schedule for its own sake belongs on the same list. Four posts a month that nobody finishes is worse for a site than one a month that people send to each other.

How to know it is working

Impressions before clicks, clicks before rankings. A page climbing from nowhere to page two shows up as impressions long before it shows up as traffic, and teams that only watch traffic abandon work a fortnight before it lands.

Give a change eight weeks before judging it, and change one thing at a time. Two changes in a week is a result you cannot attribute.
