Discover how the pandemic has reshaped digital marketing strategies across Canada, with new tools and approaches for reaching customers online.

Digital Transformation: How Direct Marketing has evolved in Canada during the Pandemic

Direct marketing in Canada spent a decade drifting online. Then it moved in a season. Teams that had been posting a quarterly catalogue found themselves running an email programme, a paid social budget and a support inbox inside the same month, and most of them were learning on the job.

What actually changed

The obvious change was where the budget went. The lasting one was who had to understand it. A campaign that used to be signed off once now needs somebody watching it daily, and that somebody is usually the person who was running the print schedule last year.

That is the gap the training market moved into. The tools were not the hard part; nobody needs a course to open an ads manager. Knowing which of its forty numbers to act on is the part people pay to be taught.

What the teams that coped had in common

  • One owner per channel. Not one owner for "digital". A channel with two part-time owners gets checked twice a week by neither of them.
  • A number they had agreed on beforehand. Reach, replies, revenue: any of them works, and arguing about which after the campaign has run does not.
  • A weekly hour that was never cancelled. The teams that kept a standing review kept their numbers. The ones that reviewed when there was time reviewed twice.
  • Somebody allowed to stop a campaign. Spending is easy to start and awkward to end. Naming who may end it turns that into a decision rather than a conversation.

Where the money went instead

Print did not vanish, but it stopped being the default. Budgets moved toward things that could be measured within a week, which favoured email and search over brand work with a longer payoff.

That bias has a cost, and it is worth naming: a channel that pays back in eighteen months loses every argument to one that pays back in eight days, whether or not it is the better investment.

What to learn first

If you are catching up, start with the measurement rather than the channels. Someone who understands attribution can pick up an ads platform in a fortnight. Someone who has learned four platforms and no measurement is guessing on all four.

After that, one channel to a real standard beats four to a demo standard. Depth is what gets results, and it is also what gets noticed on a CV.
