The Rise of Podcast Marketing: A Complete Guide

The Rise of Podcast Marketing: A Complete Guide

Podcasting is the only channel where somebody will give you forty minutes of undivided attention and then thank you for it. That is also why it is the hardest to fake: the format has nowhere for a thin idea to hide.

Why the numbers look small and matter anyway

A show with two thousand listeners has a smaller audience than a mediocre post and a far larger claim on them. Forty minutes of voice builds more trust than a year of impressions, which is why the conversion rates embarrass every other channel.

The trap is comparing the two on reach. If you judge a podcast by the metric a social feed is optimised for, you will cancel it in month four, one month before the compounding starts.

What a show needs before episode one

  • A question it exists to answer. "Conversations with interesting people" is not a show. "How did this get built" is, and it tells you who to invite.
  • A length you can defend. Pick the length the material needs and hold it. An hour of twenty minutes of content is how a show loses the audience it already had.
  • Twelve episodes of runway. Nobody finds a show at episode two. If you cannot see twelve, the format is wrong, not the marketing.
  • One person who edits. Editing is what separates a show from a recording, and it is the first job that quietly stops happening when nobody owns it.

Getting found

Discovery on podcast platforms barely exists. Shows grow through guests, through other shows, and through the clip that somebody sends a colleague, in that order.

Which means the marketing work is mostly editorial: booking guests whose audience should hear you, and cutting the two minutes worth sending. Both are decided before you record, not after.

Measuring it honestly

Downloads are a vanity number with a delay built in. Completion rate is the one that tells you whether the show is working, and it is the one most teams never look at.

Beyond that, ask new customers where they heard of you and count the answers by hand. It is unscientific and it is still more accurate than any attribution a podcast will give you.
